CSE vs Artificial Intelligence and Data Science: an IEM/UEM course decision worksheet

Compare CSE and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science through specific project tasks, curriculum questions, dated admission requirements and campus checks.

Compare two concrete kinds of work

CSE and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science lead to different questions in the interest tests below. These are independent investigation tasks. Check the actual programme documents before treating any suggested subject, project or laboratory as an IEM/UEM curriculum claim.

What changes between these two investigations

The proposed CSE task is a library-management service; the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Science task is a prediction pipeline joining data and models. The first centres on data modelling, algorithms and application correctness, while the second centres on the interface between data quality and model assessment. Treat this as a way to compare the work that attracts you, not a prediction of the subjects either institution will examine.

Test the distinction through failure: for CSE, investigate a missing record, concurrent update or interrupted write. For Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, investigate shifted measurements, missing observations and target leakage. A convincing result needs different evidence in each case: a reproducible software repository and timing report versus a pipeline report separating data failures from model limitations. Ask which programme provides the teaching, supervision and access needed for the investigation you prefer.

CSE: inspect the technical work

Inspect the progression from introductory programming to data structures, algorithm analysis, operating systems, databases and networks. Look for prerequisites that connect these subjects rather than isolated tool demonstrations. Check whether electives allow exploration of security, machine learning or systems without replacing essential foundations. Ask how individual programming competence is assessed inside a team project.

Build a small library-management service with persistent records, search, user permissions and a reproducible setup. Explain the data model, compare search strategies and measure response times as the number of records grows. Include invalid input, duplicate borrowing and interrupted updates in the tests. The finished repository should let another student reproduce both correct behaviour and known limitations.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science: inspect the technical work

Map compulsory subjects into computing foundations, probability and statistics, data systems and AI methods. Check prerequisites and assessment hours rather than merely counting module names. Ask which topics are electives and which every student completes. A programme promising several fields should show how students practise them in connected projects without losing essential foundations.

Build a prediction workflow with a documented data collection process, a descriptive analysis, a baseline model and a held-out evaluation. Explain where a data-quality decision changes the model result. Present one useful failure case as well as the aggregate score. The project should connect statistical reasoning and software reproducibility rather than treating a notebook as a complete product.

Compare employment by role

Investigate software development, systems, testing and data-related roles by reading the actual responsibilities and entry assessments. A recruiter name does not establish that every computing programme may apply. Request the eligible branch list, selection stages and number of students joining each role. Check whether reported compensation describes recurring salary or a larger package with conditional components.

Ask whether reported graduate roles concern analysis, data engineering, model development or ordinary software work. For each, inspect the responsibilities and assessment requirements. A combined degree title cannot guarantee access to every specialised role. Compare recruiter eligibility for AI and DS against the exact alternative programme you are considering.

Check the two actual admission offers

The Kolkata 2026 reference for CSE is 80% / 80%; check required subjects; for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science it is 60% / 60%; PCM 45%. Both displayed B.Tech totals are ₹9,45,000, so this particular dated tuition table alone does not decide between them. It excludes a full personal living and project budget and does not confirm a later joining batch.

The current engineering microsite lists plain CSE at Salt Lake. Verify the teaching building, laboratory access and the campus printed on the offer. If a counsellor describes another location, obtain the exact current programme listing rather than translating a group-wide CSE label into a seat at that location.

The engineering microsite lists AI and DS at New Town. Confirm that this is the location named in the current offer, and ask which department manages laboratories and projects. Do not transfer Salt Lake AIML eligibility or placement information into this programme merely because both titles contain artificial intelligence.

Record the reason for your choice

Choose between CSE and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science using one verified module, one assessed task and one resource. Keep the alternative open until the programme, campus, eligibility and written offer agree.
