What binary-tree traversal means

A traversal order specifies when a node is visited relative to its subtrees.

The working rule

Inorder is left-node-right; preorder is node-left-right; postorder is left-right-node.

Read each symbol or named operation in its stated context. Before using this rule, identify the input information and the output the question actually requests. A rule recalled from memory still needs its domain and assumptions.

Set up a valid model

State the representation and computational model: indexing convention, bit width, data-structure operations, graph assumptions, language rules or protocol service. Follow the operation sequence explicitly. A result under one model is not automatically valid under a different representation.

Distinction to understand

Assuming every binary tree's inorder traversal is sorted confuses a binary tree with a binary search tree.

Explain the distinction in your own words before moving to calculation. A useful explanation identifies which assumption or reference convention would have to change for a different answer to become appropriate.

Without computing a new numerical case, explain why this statement is relevant: Inorder is left-node-right; preorder is node-left-right; postorder is left-right-node.

Trace a small example and a boundary case. Distinguish correctness from complexity, a necessary condition from a sufficient one, and declared constraints from coincidences in sample data. Check whether the question asks for an exact count, a bound or a qualitative property.
