IEMJEE Chemistry preparation: Atomic numbers and isotopes — error clinic and diagnostic check

Atomic number counts protons; isotopes of one element share proton count but differ in neutrons. This error clinic and diagnostic check develops that specific skill using independently written teaching material.

The error pattern

An ion's charge changes electron count, not the element's proton-defined atomic number.

An error clinic starts with the reason an approach fails, rather than memorising an exception in isolation. State the hidden assumption or changed definition that makes the mistaken approach tempting.

Rebuild the correct model

Atomic number counts protons; isotopes of one element share proton count but differ in neutrons.

For a neutral atom, electrons=Z; neutrons=A−Z.

Identify the species, reaction conditions and model before manipulating numbers. Balance atoms and charges where relevant. Keep amount, mass, concentration and activity conventions separate; specify when an ideal concentration approximation replaces a more exact thermodynamic description.

Diagnostic question

How many electrons does Na⁺ have if Z=11?

Before solving, write one sentence explaining how the error pattern above could affect this question. Then choose a method that keeps the correct definition, convention or model visible.

Diagnostic answer

It has lost one electron, leaving 10.

Compare the actual reasoning steps, not only the final value or chosen word. A correct final result obtained from inconsistent assumptions is not a dependable method for a different problem.

Verification checklist

Check atom and charge bookkeeping, units, signs and the identity of the species to which a statement applies. For an organic transformation, retain the substrate and conditions. A familiar reagent or periodic trend is not enough to prove every proposed product or comparison.

Keep an error-log entry with the topic, the failed step, the corrected principle and a later reattempt. Track whether the same failure recurs. The purpose is to improve reasoning on this topic; the log is not a certificate of examination performance.
