IEMJEE Chemistry preparation: Theoretical and percentage yield — worked example and reasoning

Theoretical yield follows stoichiometry; actual isolated yield can be smaller because of incomplete conversion or losses. This worked example and reasoning develops that specific skill using independently written teaching material.

Problem to solve

Theoretical product is 10 g and actual product is 8 g. Find yield.

Try the problem before reading the answer. Record the requested quantity, relevant information and any interpretation choices. Keep this original practice example separate from official examination questions or previous-year papers.

Choose the governing principle

Percent yield=100×actual yield/theoretical yield.

Theoretical yield follows stoichiometry; actual isolated yield can be smaller because of incomplete conversion or losses.

Worked answer

100×8/10=80%.

The answer follows the stated model and the values in this question. Preserve exact expressions when given; if you use a numerical approximation, label it and keep sufficient precision until the final step.

Audit the reasoning

Check atom and charge bookkeeping, units, signs and the identity of the species to which a statement applies. For an organic transformation, retain the substrate and conditions. A familiar reagent or periodic trend is not enough to prove every proposed product or comparison.

A specific error to avoid here: Purity and percentage yield answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.

Explain before repeating

Write a short explanation linking the governing principle to the answer rather than copying the final line. Identify one assumption and explain how violating it would make this method unreliable. Use the linked worksheet for a new task, then return to this example after a delay and solve it without the answer visible.
