IEMCET basic maths: original practice with worked answers

Practise percentages, ratios, averages and algebra with original worked examples. These are independent exercises, not official exam questions.

Percentages

Question: a ₹800 item is discounted by 15%. Answer: the discount is 800 × 0.15 = ₹120, leaving ₹680. Check whether a question asks for the discount or the final price.

Ratios

Question: divide ₹750 in the ratio 2:3. Answer: five total parts mean ₹150 per part; the two shares are ₹300 and ₹450. Their sum must equal ₹750.

Averages

Question: four scores are 12, 16, 18 and 14. Answer: the sum is 60; dividing by four gives an average of 15. Use the number of observations, not the number of gaps between them.

Basic algebra

Question: solve 3x + 5 = 26. Answer: subtract five to obtain 3x = 21, then divide by three, so x = 7. Substituting gives 21 + 5 = 26.
