Compare two concrete kinds of work
Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science lead to different questions in the interest tests below. These are independent investigation tasks. Check the actual programme documents before treating any suggested subject, project or laboratory as an IEM/UEM curriculum claim.
What changes between these two investigations
The proposed Artificial Intelligence task is a heuristic graph-search planner; the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Science task is a prediction pipeline joining data and models. The first centres on search assumptions, representation and reasoning, while the second centres on the interface between data quality and model assessment. Treat this as a way to compare the work that attracts you, not a prediction of the subjects either institution will examine.
Test the distinction through failure: for Artificial Intelligence, investigate an unreachable goal or misleading heuristic. For Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, investigate shifted measurements, missing observations and target leakage. A convincing result needs different evidence in each case: a search trace with path cost and explored-state counts versus a pipeline report separating data failures from model limitations. Ask which programme provides the teaching, supervision and access needed for the investigation you prefer.
| Independent inspection task | Evidence to request or produce |
|---|---|
| Artificial Intelligence | a search trace with path cost and explored-state counts |
| Artificial Intelligence and Data Science | a pipeline report separating data failures from model limitations |
Artificial Intelligence: inspect the technical work
Ask for modules on search, reasoning, knowledge representation, learning methods and their mathematical prerequisites. Check which subjects remain compulsory in programming, algorithms, databases and operating systems. Inspect whether assessment requires an explanation of method choice and failure conditions. Distinguish using an external model from implementing or carefully evaluating an AI technique.
Create a route-planning exercise on a small graph with obstacles and weighted edges. Compare a simple uninformed search with a heuristic method, state the assumptions behind each heuristic and test situations where it performs poorly. Report the path cost and explored states. Explain how this symbolic problem differs from fitting a prediction model to observations.
Artificial Intelligence and Data Science: inspect the technical work
Map compulsory subjects into computing foundations, probability and statistics, data systems and AI methods. Check prerequisites and assessment hours rather than merely counting module names. Ask which topics are electives and which every student completes. A programme promising several fields should show how students practise them in connected projects without losing essential foundations.
Build a prediction workflow with a documented data collection process, a descriptive analysis, a baseline model and a held-out evaluation. Explain where a data-quality decision changes the model result. Present one useful failure case as well as the aggregate score. The project should connect statistical reasoning and software reproducibility rather than treating a notebook as a complete product.
Compare the failure you would rather investigate
An apparently intelligent output may be produced by a heuristic that fails outside familiar examples. Change the goal, costs and admissible actions, then test whether the solution remains valid. Check termination and how an impossible goal is reported. This type of exercise lets you evaluate your interest in reasoning about methods rather than judging AI only by fluent output.
A combined project can fail at the data stage even if the model code is correct. Introduce missing records, shifted measurement units or an unrealistic target variable and show the consequences. Separate a data pipeline error from a modelling limitation. This distinction helps determine whether you enjoy the full workflow or prefer a narrower computing or statistical focus.
Check the two actual admission offers
The Kolkata 2026 reference for Artificial Intelligence is 70% / 70%; PCM 50%; for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science it is 60% / 60%; PCM 45%. Both displayed B.Tech totals are ₹9,45,000, so this particular dated tuition table alone does not decide between them. It excludes a full personal living and project budget and does not confirm a later joining batch.
The engineering microsite places its AI listing at New Town. Verify whether the offer describes CSE with AI or another exact award name, and where classes take place. Request the current programme document rather than using a group-wide list to infer availability at Salt Lake or Jaipur.
The engineering microsite lists AI and DS at New Town. Confirm that this is the location named in the current offer, and ask which department manages laboratories and projects. Do not transfer Salt Lake AIML eligibility or placement information into this programme merely because both titles contain artificial intelligence.
Record the reason for your choice
Choose between Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science using one verified module, one assessed task and one resource. Keep the alternative open until the programme, campus, eligibility and written offer agree.
