What tense and time reference means

Tense selection should match the sentence's intended time relationship and context. A memorised keyword alone is insufficient.

The working rule

Distinguish an event's time from its relation to another event or the present.

Read each symbol or named operation in its stated context. Before using this rule, identify the input information and the output the question actually requests. A rule recalled from memory still needs its domain and assumptions.

Set up a valid model

Translate the wording into a clearly defined task before calculating or selecting an option. In arithmetic, identify the reference base and time period. In English, use the complete sentence or passage and preserve its intended meaning rather than relying on a single keyword.

Distinction to understand

Changing a tense without checking the full time relationship can change the meaning rather than repair it.

Explain the distinction in your own words before moving to calculation. A useful explanation identifies which assumption or reference convention would have to change for a different answer to become appropriate.

Without computing a new numerical case, explain why this statement is relevant: Distinguish an event's time from its relation to another event or the present.

Return to the wording and test the proposed answer. Check the base of a percentage, the weights in an average and the units in a rate. For language tasks, verify agreement and context without adding facts the passage never supplies.
