Identify the role you are investigating
Investigate application development, infrastructure, database, testing and support roles by responsibilities and progression. Ask whether a placement described as IT involves software engineering, operations or customer-facing service. Check which branches may sit each assessment. Recruiter overlap does not eliminate differences in the preparation expected for particular jobs.
Ask for the work behind the internship
Build an internal service with a relational database, role-based access and a documented deployment procedure. Add a backup-and-restore exercise, a basic health check and a test for an invalid update. Explain how you would investigate an unavailable service. This connects software construction with reliable operation rather than stopping at a successful local demonstration.
A service can appear functional while backups are unusable or permissions expose records to the wrong user. Test restoration and least-privilege access explicitly. Separate application failures from configuration and network failures. Interest in keeping an information system dependable can help distinguish your preference from a mainly modelling or hardware-focused course.
Use a comparable cohort
For Information Technology, request the actual programme, graduating year, number seeking work, students placed and students continuing to study. Keep multiple offers separate from unique students. Ask whether internship data describe applications, selections, starts or completed work. A placement percentage without its denominator cannot be compared fairly with another course, campus or year.
Check the skills and practical access
Compare programming, data structures, databases, networks, software engineering and systems administration with the alternative curriculum. Ask how students practise deployment, monitoring and access control alongside development. Check elective freedom and individual assessment. Shared recruiters or classrooms do not establish that IT and CSE have identical academic requirements.
The engineering microsite currently lists IT at Salt Lake. Verify the exact programme on the joining offer and request the department timetable or current campus listing. If another campus is proposed, obtain direct current evidence instead of transferring the Salt Lake listing across the group.
Separate evidence from a promise
The IEM NIRF 2026 engineering submission is institution-level historical evidence, not a guarantee for Information Technology. Do not replace a missing course-level record with the highest package or a group recruiter list. Keep offer evidence, joining outcomes and salary definitions distinct, and use your own project work to identify what preparation a desired role would still require.
