Independent Akash Talks guidance. Official application, admission and fee decisions belong to the institution. How we verify information
Use comparable columns
When comparing multiple colleges during counselling (such as IEM, Heritage, Techno India, and UEM), avoid subjective impressions and marketing slogans. Build a structured comparison spreadsheet using standardized, objective criteria across all rows.
Key columns should include: university affiliation (Autonomous MAKAUT vs Private University), NAAC/NBA accreditations, total 4-year tuition fee, hostel and mess charges, verified median salary from NIRF, faculty-to-student ratio, and daily commute time from your residence.
Attach sources
Every data point entered into your comparison spreadsheet must be accompanied by its verified primary source URL and the date checked. Note whether a placement statistic is drawn from an official NIRF report, an AICTE disclosure, or an unverified student review forum.
Attaching sources prevents confusion during intense counselling rounds when relatives, peer groups, and social media influencers share contradictory figures.
Write down the tradeoff
No institution is perfect in every dimension. Clearly articulate the tradeoffs for each college option on your shortlist. For example: College A may offer stronger brand legacy and placements but stricter rules and higher fees; College B may be cheaper and closer to home but with a larger batch size.
Documenting these tradeoffs explicitly helps you and your parents make calm, logical choices when seat allocation deadlines arrive.
Update after an offer
Keep your spreadsheet active throughout the admission cycle. Once entrance exam rank cards (WBJEE, JEE Main, IEMJEE) are announced, update each row with the opening and closing rank trends from previous counselling rounds.
When you receive a provisional allotment or offer letter, enter the exact payment deadline, refund cancellation window, and reporting date to ensure no critical timeline is missed.
Comparison sheet template columns
Ensure your decision spreadsheet tracks these essential attributes for each institution:
Maintaining this sheet prevents rushed decisions during high-pressure seat counselling windows.
- Institution name, campus address, and affiliating university
- Total 4-year fee (tuition + mandatory charges + estimated living costs)
- Accreditation status (NAAC grade, NBA accredited programmes, AICTE EoA)
- NIRF median package (UG 4-year cohort) and percentage of students placed
- WBJEE/IEMJEE historical closing ranks for your target branch
- Refund terms and final cancellation deadlines
