Which cohort?
The comparison between Core CSE and the AI specialisation generally applies to current and recent batches (students admitted in the last few years). The first two years remain common for both groups. The specialisation subjects and electives start properly from the third year onwards. If you are asking about a specific admission year or batch, please share more details so I can refine the answer.
Students or offers?
Both Core CSE and AI specialisation students get decent placement opportunities, especially in IT companies. The overall placement rate is usually high for both groups. Core CSE students typically receive offers for software development, full-stack, backend, and general IT roles. Companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant and Capgemini regularly hire them.
AI specialisation students have an added advantage for roles related to machine learning, data science, AI engineering and analytics. Some product-based companies and start-ups specifically look for AI skills, which can sometimes lead to slightly better packages or more specialised offers.
In most cases, the average package remains similar for both streams. The difference mainly appears in the type of roles rather than the number of offers. Students with strong skills, projects and coding ability perform well in either stream.
Which salary?
For both Core CSE and AI specialisation, the average package usually falls in the range of ₹4–5.5 LPA in most mid-tier private colleges. The highest packages can go up to ₹15–18 LPA or more for a few students with strong skills, especially those placed in product companies or specialised AI roles.
AI specialisation students sometimes get slightly higher offers for pure machine learning or data science positions, but the overall average salary remains quite similar for both streams. The final package depends more on individual skills, projects and performance in interviews than on the branch alone.
Where is the evidence?
The salary figures I mentioned (average ₹4–5.5 LPA and highest around ₹15–18 LPA) come from publicly available placement data and student reviews of mid-tier private engineering colleges in Kolkata, especially for CSE and AI/ML branches. They are approximate trends, not exact official figures for every college. Actual packages vary by batch, company, and student performance.
For reliable evidence, always refer to the latest official placement report released by the specific college.
What is still missing?
The placement figures shared earlier are approximate trends. Several important details are still missing for a strong and reliable claim:
Without the official placement report and branch-wise data, the salary figures remain general estimates rather than confirmed facts.
- Official placement report of the specific college.
- Separate placement statistics for Core CSE and AI specialisation.
- Exact average package and also highest package for each stream.
- Number of students placed from each branch.
- List of companies that hired AI specialisation students versus Core CSE students.
- Year-wise placement data (latest batch)
Official sources and placement verification
To properly verify placement figures, you should check these official sources:
Student review websites (Shiksha, Collegedunia, etc.) can give an idea, but they are not official. Only the college’s own placement report or official communication should be treated as confirmed evidence.
- The college’s official website (Placement / Career section)
- Latest official placement report or brochure released by the college
- Affiliating university’s records (if published)
- AICTE or state technical education portal (sometimes contains summary data)
