A parent’s checklist for comparing IEM and UEM offers

Compare the course, institution, total cost and written conditions in a shared decision sheet.

Independent Akash Talks guidance. Official application, admission and fee decisions belong to the institution. How we verify information

Agree on priorities

Choosing an engineering college requires alignment between parents and students on key criteria: academic discipline, curriculum rigor, university status, commute distance, and long-term career aspirations. When comparing institutions like IEM and UEM, note differences in university affiliation (e.g. MAKAUT state-affiliated autonomy vs state private university status).

Have an open discussion about whether the student aims for immediate campus placements in IT and software services, core engineering roles, GATE/PSU preparation, or higher studies abroad.

Build a complete cost view

Plan your financial budget around the total cost of education over four years, not just the initial admission fee. Factor in four years of tuition, semester exam fees, hostel seat rent or daily commute expenses, food, books, study equipment, and emergency medical allowances.

Identify whether student loans will be required and verify whether the institution is registered on the Vidya Lakshmi portal or has established tie-ups with nationalized banks for straightforward loan processing.

Check documents together

Review key institutional credentials as a family: UGC recognition under 2(f)/12(B), AICTE approval notices, NBA accreditation of specific branches, and NAAC grading. Check the latest NIRF ranking submissions for accurate data on student strength, graduation rates, and median salaries.

Ensure all student academic records, entrance exam rank cards (WBJEE, JEE Main, IEMJEE), caste or category certificates, and domicile proofs are verified and photocopied well in advance of counselling.

Keep the student involved

While parents often weigh safety, discipline, and return on investment, the student must thrive in the daily learning environment. Involve the student directly in inspecting lab infrastructure, campus culture, hackathon participation, coding clubs, and student societies.

A student genuinely motivated by their chosen branch and campus environment performs significantly better academically and during campus recruitment.
